Teaser Billboards

technology — jeffn @ 6:14 pm

I hate teaser billboard campaigns. You’ve seen them. You know the billboard on the interstate that says “jumpintheair.com”, or something to that effect, in big bold letters. Or the one that says “it’s coming…”. Don’t get me wrong I’m all for viral and  guerrilla marketing, but teaser billboards don’t fall into either of these categories.  These billboards can only be described as marketing vanity.  When I see one of these things the first thing that goes through my mind is, “This company thinks they are so important that I have to go “find out” out who they are.” Give me a break! I don’t want to play detective just to find out who someone is and what they are selling.

  1. I’ve seen these here on I-15. Just a big blank backdrop with a URL of some weird name. I’ll admit get’s me curious, but I’m more irritated because I don’t know what the site is about. I don’t want to type in some URL and find content that I wasn’t looking for. So I don’t go there at all. I think the nutrition drink industry plays this game - similar to MLM companies who don’t really want to tell what they’re selling until you’ve read about how rich you can become. It’s a hook, line, sinker deal for those naive types who haven’t learned about the woes of MLM. They go there, see the big boats and cars, sign up and waste their time on “starting their own business” which really isn’t a business at all. I’m with you Jeff.
