The Importance of Discovery and Creative Briefing

Would you build a house with out having a blueprint? Of course not. So Why do some companies build websites with out a plan? The thing that sets a good web designer apart from a bad one is the ability to communicate with the client and make a solid plan before any work starts on the website. I have met many designers throughout the years who believe they are the experts and whatever they produce is the best for the project. This is blind arrogance. Creativity and quality work do not happen in a ... read more!

The Amazing PVC Rectangle

While shooting our web/tv series, Midnyte, I ended up creating a wonderful gadget that I used on almost every shooting day. I needed to be able to shoot scenes fast, but didn't want to eliminate tracking shots and I didn't want to shoot handheld. A Stedicam was out due to cost and the practice needed to master such a device (which means lots of re-takes). A dolly took to much time to set up. A FigRig (essentially a steering wheel with a camera mounted in the middle) was the most logical choice, ... read more!

Quick trick to allow users to choose font size

You may want to allow your users to select their font size on your web site. It is cleaner to use the browsers built in functionality but when your crowd of users is less advanced, you may want to provide a simple "choose your font size" option on your site. This can of course be done by just swapping out stylesheets depending on which option they chose. If you had three options for font size, you would have 3 stylesheets for those sizes. If you are going to allow them to set their font size, it... read more!

Is a Depth of Field Adapter Worth it?

Getting true depth of field (DOF) on a video camera seems to be the holy grail of low budget filmmaking. Since just about all video cameras shoot everything "flat" (where everything appears in focus almost all the time), it's hard to get that elusive "film look" where there are lots of focal planes to choose from. Being able to control this focus means you can easily direct the eye of the viewer toward what they should be looking at. The only way to get this kind of DOF on a video camera is to m... read more!

What is html and css?

You have most definitely heard these terms before ( at least html ), but do you understand what it is exactly that everyone is referring to? HTML is an acronym that stands for Hyper Text Markup Language, this comes in handy as trivia but doesn't really help the cause of knowing what html really is. HTML boils down to a text document that is structured a certain way so that computers can parse information. It is structured so that items are organized in a hierarchy from the document level down to... read more!

The CBR Conundrum

There's a million tiny variables in any kind of project that make it work correctly and the same is true for video. This past week I uploaded an episode of our web/TV series, Midnyte, after running it through its usual paces. Everything checked out, but I had to rush off and was unable to verify that the YouTube version was okay. Why wouldn't it be? I've never had a problem before. Soon after, I began getting numerous text messages about how the sound sync went off in the middle of the show, tur... read more!

YouTube Now Showing Full Length Films and TV Shows

Maybe in an effort to compete with the likes of Hulu.com and Network TV sites, YouTube is beginning to show select full length films and TV content. Granted, much of it is old (original Outer Limits, anyone?) and some has to be in the public domain, but this is a huge indicator of what is coming in the near future. It won't be long before any and all shows from the past and present will be available online, which will act as one giant VOD (Video On Demand) network. It might not be controlled by ... read more!
