Mobile Phone Favorite List

Form hitting the pavement to a few near falls from the chairlift, my Treo has seen more than its fair share. The dawn of mobile computing, ah yes. Soon we will have all mobile devices doing more that we could imagine, docking at the end of the day with external hard drives, robust docking stations and enormous monitors. Hopefully in conjunction, we can connect these devices to our Segway Personal Transporter (or the new more military version here) only to key in our destination. So, in an effort.... read more

Vista “andLinux”

andLinux Beta 1 KDE on Vista Ultimate
I had the pleasure of installing andLinux Beta 1 KDE Version over the weekend on my previously blogged about and underwhelming Vista Ultimate Dell XPS 1530. The result? I love my computer again. I was originally looking for a way to rsync files to windows from various remote Linux servers. Cgywin was close, but just didn't give me the functionality I wanted. Thanks to andLinux, I now have a fully operating Ubuntu distribution (cron jobs and all) running as a service on Vista. Be right back, need.... read more

How to Land High End Web Development Contracts.

This is how you land a contract for web design services: Send the lead a proposal Wait for the lead to sign the contract and send the down payment. Business will grow overnight. Yea right. We know that doesn't work. If it did, we actually wouldn't have to work to get business. I've learned over the years that there are key components to winning new business in the web development industry. I believe there are 3 key factors: Knowlege and expertise A portfolio full of high end work and satsif.... read more

Passwords, friend or foe

I am a big proponent of secure passwords, but even I use some passwords for two or more applications. There are just too many applications requiring a password these days, how can one manage all of them. Well you can always use a password manager that encrypts all passwords based on one master password, you can try and remember them all, or you can reuse some passwords over and over for different systems. Reuse of passwords is a bad security decision, if someone happens to guess or learn your pa.... read more

IP Phone Problems

IP Phone Problems
Do you have IP phones yet? Hold tight before you buy. There are a few things you should know. About a year ago we purchased some AVAYA IP phones. We had been stretching our cell phones as "legitimate" work extensions as long as we possibly could before having to invest in a "phone system". When we hit the point of hiring a receptionist to help with all the calls, we bit the bullet and paid the money for 4 Internet based IP phones. At first everything worked great. At last we could transfer c.... read more

Teaser Billboards

I hate teaser billboard campaigns. You've seen them. You know the billboard on the interstate that says "jumpintheair.com", or something to that effect, in big bold letters. Or the one that says "it's coming...". Don't get me wrong I'm all for viral and guerrilla marketing, but teaser billboards don't fall into either of these categories. These billboards can only be described as marketing vanity. When I see one of these things the first thing that goes through my mind is, "This company thinks t.... read more

Language trends on the web

On the web, there is always a big force of change, old languages fading away (cold fusion and classic asp ) and relatively new languages that are trying to make a name for themselves and those that have stood the test of time. There are languages trying to make their mark on the web world: ruby/rails and python among the few, and those that have been around and are widely used: asp.net/c# , java and php. As a programmer who works for a web company, it's always exciting seeing what people create .... read more

Excel Functions - SumIF AND Combined

Excel Sumif
Maybe you'll laugh now that you know I just switched from Microsoft Office Professional 97 (wince - don't throw tomatoes) to the new 2007 Office Suite. Literally within minutes I was loving the new features of Word and especially Excel. We build a lot of websites, but spreadsheets come into play a lot when prepping/scrubbing data for database insertion or just practical business applications. There are actually some new functions that make spread sheeting less of a chore and actually a bit enj.... read more
