Domain registrar vs domain name servers

When you purchase a domain name from a registrar, you are buying a top level registration so that the domain name you purchased has a SOA ( start of authority ) record. This record tells requesters where the nameservers are for your domain, it does not say where the actual domain is hosted or what hosting provider it is under. Beware of the .COM Domain Price Increase

I Oppose ICANN-VeriSign Agreement The Agreement basically says that Verisign will may take control of the .COM registry and with that power, also has in its plans to increase the cost of .com domains 7%. There are some proponents of the agreement, but many greatly oppose it including GoDaddy - one of the largest registrars of .com domains.
