save computer power

Many people today are striving to be more eco-friendly. How people use computers plays a big role in the environment. Of course there is proper disposal of a computer after it dies, but another big thing is power consumption. Here are a few quick and easy tips that you can do to have your computer save power:

  1. turn the computer off when not in use
  2. set the power settings on your computer appropriately
there are power settings for your monitor and your hard disk that allow you to tweak when these devices go into standby mode. The idea is that you set an amount of time that will count down as you don't use those devices or your computer. You can set these power options by going to Start button -> Control panel -> Power Options.
It is a good idea to set these to the lowest value that won't be annoying to you. Say you go to lunch in the middle of the day, if you set your times to about 10 mins for monitor and hard drive, those devices will use less power while you are out at lunch. When you go home at the end of the day, turn off your computer, or set it to standby. If you have a hard time remembering to do this, in power options set the system standby time to about an hour. After you have gone home, if you forgot to set your computer to standby, after an hour of inactivity it will go into standby all by itself.
  3. In addition to turning off the computer, remember to turn off your computer monitor and speakers when they are not being used.

if you take these simple steps, you will do your little part to help the enviroment.
