YouTube goes Widescreen!

The largest video sharing site in the world has finally caught up with the rest of us. Their default video player has grown up from an out-of-date 4:3 aspect ratio to a big boy 16:9 aspect ratio. What does this mean? Not a whole lot, unless you're a filmmaker. Many folks (and cheap direct-to-YouTube cameras like the Flip) will still use a 4:3 image and upload fine. It will just sit in the middle of their 16:9 sibling and be "pillarboxed" with black bars on both sides. This is similar to "l... read more!

Using php from unix command line to process/modify files

This trick/snippet combines the flexibility of unix/linux command line tools combined with php scripting. If you are unfamiliar with the "find" command, you are missing out on your abilities to search and perform updates to many files. PHP can be used to do many things, this trick will teach you how to do some of those things on many files in one go, helping you automate what would normally be a very manual process. For example, say you need to do a find replace on many files, you could use find... read more!

The Canon HF100: Who Puts This Stuff on the Bottom?

Here at Lunawebs we use a pair of solid-state HD camcorders to record all of our footage. They are great cameras with lots of manual control and a very nice image. They record directly to SD cards using AVCHD, which is a compressed form of HD, but looks very good (especially at the highest bitrate). Sure, you have to have a beefy computer to decode the image, but since cameras tend to outlive computers, it is an easy call in progressive purchasing. One thing that absolutely baffles me is how suc... read more!

A Set Top Box for the Masses

It seems as if everyone is trying to create "the box" that will stream content from the internet to your television. Blockbuster recently got into the act, announcing they'd have such a doo-dad just in time for the holidays. Then there are existing boxes such as the Apple TV, the Roku (from Netflix), the Xbox360 (yes, it will stream video), and one of the first DVRs still around, TiVo. All these gizmos let you get up from your swivel chair, plop down in front of The Tube (or is it The Screen now... read more!

Make People Feel Something

There are some great articles on the web about viral video and marketing. I feel like I know the technical ins-and-outs of video production, but there is a core element to any story that will make it memorable: emotion. If you can create any type of this in a viewer, they will remember. This is point number one in Thomas Baekdal's excellent web post, "7 Tricks to Viral Web Marketing", and it's super valuable on any storytelling stage. Of course, the trick is how to create a similar emotion in as... read more!

Wanna make your tripod head spin?

Unless you're not a movie tech-nerd, you may have never heard of the RED camera. Essentially, it's a video camera that can produce resolutions high enough to equal and/or surpass film. The price tag is much lower than a film camera, and there is no more film stock to buy (it records to a hard drive). A purely digital medium has even more meaning as we witness the conversion of movie theaters from film to digital projectors. RED has just announced its new lineup for next year, and it's a mind-bl... read more!
